PORT ABERDEEN

Note:  Due to prolonged illness I am no longer able to provide designs or support for them.  These pages are otherwise left intact to provide continuity and a reference for my designs.  I am unable to answer emails or correspondence.  Thank you for your support over the years; I have enjoyed working with all my clients and wish you fair winds in all your endeavors.  Mal Low, N.A., December 8, 2002.

Comments by the designer:

I designed Port Aberdeen as a modification of my basic 26 ft. tug hull for a Scottish construction company working on port facilities in support of the North Sea oil patch.

She has an apparent two deck superstructure for maximum visibility over barges being pushed rather than towed astern, which the client seldom does.  I say "apparent two deck" because the two decks are nested internally; the visible deck line on the outside is actually higher than the deck internally.  Actual pilothouse deck height is a little more than 1/2 a full deck above the main deck.  (Remember that PERKINS' pilothouse sole is below main deck level by one step.)

Since sea states can be rather high in that part of the world I gave her an extended height bulwark forward.  PORT ABERDEEN  has a definite European look with the wood faced bridge face and wings.  The face is non-functional but the wings allow the side ports to be opened so that the operator can gain additional visibility to the side while still being somewhat sheltered.

As in PELAGIC, the pilothouse access is from the rear between the twin stacks.  Engine room access is through a watertight door on the port side.   Accommodations are entered through the starboard side watertight door and emergency egress is through a forward flush deck hatch.  Unlike the standard 26 ft. PERKINS the main deck forward of the superstructure is raised, giving more space for accommodations below.

Twin engines are installed in this tug, with a total of 390 BHP.  A single 10 kw gen set is installed in the rear of the engine room.
